Young researchers discover the world of microbiology at UzhNU

A modern university performs a much broader role than just training specialists and conducting scientific research. Along with the traditional functions - educational and scientific - the so-called third mission of the university, which involves active interaction with society, the economy and regional communities, is gaining importance.

Uzhhorod National University consistently implements this mission, opening the world of science to the younger generation, popularizing scientific knowledge and contributing to the formation of interest in research activities. One example of such interaction was the educational visits of university laboratories by schoolchildren. In particular, on Friday, March 6, the laboratory of the Research and Training Center for Molecular Microbiology and Immunology of Mucous Membranes was visited by 5th grade students of the Uzhhorod Greek Catholic Private Lyceum "Theobend".

During the visit, young researchers actively got acquainted with the activities of the laboratory, learned about the peculiarities of the work of scientists and modern methods of conducting research. The students had the opportunity to see how laboratory tests are performed, as well as participate in small practical observations. In particular, the students studied the condition of the oral cavity and skin, and also learned about microorganisms that inhabit the human body. During the excursion, they were told about the role of microbiota in maintaining health, the importance of knowledge about microorganisms and their impact on the human immune system.

The tour for the guests was conducted by Nadiya Volodymyrivna Boyko, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Medical and Biological Disciplines, Advisor to the Rector on Innovations, and Svitlana Andriivna Burmey, Doctor of Philosophy, Research Fellow, who in an accessible and interesting way introduced the students to modern areas of research in the field of microbiology.

The meeting took place in a warm and informative atmosphere and was a great opportunity for schoolchildren to get to know the world of science, laboratory research and modern microbiology. Such visits not only broaden the horizons of young people, but can also be the first step towards choosing a future profession in the field of science. The Research and Training Center for Molecular Microbiology and Mucosal Immunology is always happy to welcome young visitors and is looking forward to welcoming schoolchildren and students on educational excursions in the future.

Thus, the implementation of the third mission of the university emphasizes the role of Uzhhorod National University as an important driver of social change, a source of innovation and a platform for dialogue between science, education, government and community.
