Synergy of science and rehabilitation: Ediens will present the project "Speedy recovery of heroes" at the International Conference at UzhNU

The current challenges facing Ukraine require a fundamental rethinking of classical approaches to public health, medical rehabilitation, and psychological support. An important milestone in this process will be the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Synergy of Professions in Preservation of Community Health: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Rehabilitation, Medical, Psychological and Social Services in the Context of Modern Public Health Challenges" , which will be held at Uzhhorod National University (UzhNU). The flagship initiative that Ediens presents to the medical community is the scientific and social program "Quick Recovery of Heroes". The program is aimed at comprehensive physiological support for wounded military personnel, veterans and civilians. It is designed to solve two interrelated critical problems of modern military medicine: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and multiple antibiotic resistance .

Traditional rehabilitation programs in Ukraine mostly focus on psychotherapy and social adaptation. Of course, mental health is extremely important. However, Ediens scientists insist on the need to implement parallel physiological rehabilitation . The psyche and the body are inextricably linked, and this interaction is realized through a complex biochemical bridge - the gut-brain axis .

In-depth scientific analysis: How the microbiome regulates PTSD and mental health

Recent global studies prove that intestinal dysbiosis and changes in the permeability of its mucosal barrier are the pathophysiological basis for the development of PTSD. When a person experiences severe emotional or physical traumatic stress, their body secretes large amounts of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol changes the pH, motility, and blood circulation in the gastrointestinal tract, which leads to a massive death of beneficial commensal bacteria.

It has been clinically proven that patients with PTSD experience a rapid loss of beneficial bacteria from the Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae families , and the depth of this deficit directly correlates with the severity of psycho-emotional symptoms. These microorganisms are involved in the synthesis of more than 90% of serotonin (the hormone of joy) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA - the main inhibitory neurotransmitter of the CNS), which physiologically reduces anxiety levels and improves sleep.

As part of the scientific work of the Ediens project, together with the Department of Medical and Biological Disciplines of UzhNU and colleagues from the Danylo Halytskyi Lviv National Medical University (under the leadership of the outstanding immunologist, Professor Valentyna Volodymyrivna Chop'yak ), cohort clinical studies were conducted. Scientists studied not only the composition of the intestinal microbiota, but also cellular components of immunity in the blood, in particular regulatory T-cells (Tregs) , which are responsible for immune tolerance and the prevention of autoimmune and inflammatory processes.

As a result of these large-scale studies, exclusive natural strains were isolated and patented, in particular Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus S25 . This unique strain became the basis for the creation of an innovative domestic pharmabiotic of the new generation - DefendeX™ . The drug has a dual effect: it gently suppresses pathogenic pathogens in the intestines and at the same time stabilizes the nervous system, helping the body adapt to the traumas experienced.

Combating antibiotic resistance in military hospitals
