New horizons of personalized medicine: Ediens presented breakthrough microbiome research results at UMeSCo XXIII

Modern world medicine is experiencing a tectonic shift. The era of standardized protocols “one pill for all” is gradually fading into the past, giving way to evidence-based 3P medicine — predictive, preventive, and personalized. At the center of this medical revolution is the human microbiome — a complex ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms that functions as a separate autonomous organ and regulates almost all physiological processes in our body.

An important event for the scientific and medical community was the prestigious medical congress UMeSCo XXIII , at which the Ukrainian biotechnology company Ediens presented advanced developments and clinical cases . The team of researchers and clinicians from Ediens demonstrated to the medical community the practical results of individual modeling and targeted correction of the microbiome in severe chronic pathologies. The company's report aroused lively interest, as the presented cases proved that a personalized approach based on genetic analysis is able to solve complex patient problems (such as recurrent infertility, acne, eczema, and PTSD), when classic drug protocols are already powerless.

In this detailed review, we will analyze the key scientific areas and practical cases that Ediens presented at the congress.

1. Dermatological Breakthrough: Treating Skin by Restoring Three Microbiomes

One of the most discussed areas of Ediens' presentation at UMeSCo XXIII was the presentation of clinical cases in the field of evidence-based dermatology. The traditional approach to treating skin diseases (acne, dermatitis, eczema) is often limited to topical therapy - ointments, creams or antibiotics, which only temporarily mask the symptoms.

Ediens scientists demonstrated a fundamentally different philosophy: our skin is a direct reflection of internal balance, and its health is inextricably linked to the microbiocenosis of the whole organism . The congress presented unique results of treating patients with various pathologies:

  • Case study of severe acne treatment:  A woman (born in 1976) with severe chronic acne contacted the company. Instead of the standard prescription of cosmetics, the specialists conducted an in-depth genetic study of both the patient's skin and intestinal microbiota. After identifying the exact causes of the imbalance, an individual nutrition plan was developed and a personalized course of targeted pharmabiotics was selected. The results of the correction were striking: the skin was completely cleared, and the patient noted a significant improvement in her general well-being and the disappearance of any discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract.

  • Complex case of dermatitis (solar, seborrheic, eczema and occupational allergy):  The next presented case concerned a patient with multifactorial skin lesions aggravated by chronic stress and occupational allergy to talc. The Ediens scientific team approached the problem systematically, conducting a simultaneous in-depth study of the patient’s three microbiomes  : intestinal (using next-generation NGS sequencing), skin and oral. Already on the 7th day  of therapy, an outstanding result was recorded: the number of pathogenic bacteria in all three biotopes decreased rapidly, the balance of beneficial commensal microorganisms was restored, and inflammation markers dropped significantly. Visually, rashes and redness disappeared from the skin, itching completely disappeared, and active drying and regeneration of the affected areas began.

These cases confirmed Ediens' hypothesis about the high effectiveness of the synergy of individual diagnostics and new generation targeted pharmabiotics.

2. Reproductive and Sexual Health: Secrets of the Vaginal Microbiome

The medical community was equally interested in the cases of microbiome correction of the genitourinary system presented at the congress. Dysbiosis of this area is often a hidden cause of chronic inflammatory processes and reproductive failures.

The Ediens team presented a successful clinical experience in managing a patient (born in 1984) diagnosed with infertility on the background of chronic endometritis . Traditional long-term antibiotic treatment was ineffective due to the formation of resistant bacterial biofilms.

Ediens specialists conducted an in-depth molecular genetic study of the patient's vaginal microbiome. Based on the obtained profile, a personalized correction protocol was developed and a course of individual niche pharmabiotics was prescribed. This allowed restoring the natural protective barrier of the genitourinary system, relieving chronic subclinical inflammation, and creating favorable physiological conditions for pregnancy.

This approach opens up completely new horizons for reproductive medicine and family planning, demonstrating that restoring microbial balance is the first and most important step towards overcoming infertility.

3. Biorevolution in PTSD Treatment: The Gut-Brain Axis in Action

The real scientific sensation of the UMeSCo XXIII congress was the Ediens report, dedicated to the study of the microbiome in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)  and the possibilities of its correction within the framework of personalized medicine.

The war in Ukraine has left hundreds of thousands of servicemen, veterans, and civilians suffering from hidden wounds—anxiety disorders, depression, and PTSD. Traditional treatment protocols, based solely on psychotherapy and chemical antidepressants, often show limited effectiveness because they do not take into account the profound physiological changes in the body.

Ediens scientists have proven that the key to solving this problem lies in our intestines. The latest series of large-scale scientific studies have confirmed that intestinal dysbiosis and impaired barrier function are the pathophysiological basis for the development of PTSD  through a direct two-way connection - the gut-brain axis.

Scientific facts presented by Ediens:

  • With chronic stress and trauma, the population of bacteria from the Ruminococcaceae  and Lachnospiraceae families in the human body sharply decreases .

  • It has been scientifically proven that the depth of the deficiency of these bacteria directly correlates with the severity of PTSD symptoms (nightmares, panic attacks, loss of concentration, depressive states).

  • Depletion of beneficial microflora leads to destruction of the intestinal mucosa and the entry of toxins into the bloodstream, which triggers chronic systemic inflammation that damages the nerve cells of the brain.

In response to this challenge, Ediens, together with leading medical institutions and partners, initiated a unique socio-scientific program " Speedy recovery of heroes " . The program includes:

  1. Accurate  microbiome diagnostics using next-generation sequencing (NGS) method.

  2. Overcoming the problem of multiple antibiotic resistance  in wounded soldiers in hospitals.

  3. Individual selection of psychobiotics  - special strains of live bacteria (including the unique DefendeX™ formula ), which have a proven effect on the nervous system. They actively stimulate the production of serotonin and GABA directly in the intestines, physiologically reducing anxiety and cortisol levels and normalizing sleep in military personnel.

The first stage of the program, which involved 38 patients  from a multidisciplinary clinical hospital, demonstrated the incredible dynamics of restoring the physiological and mental health of the soldiers.

The future is here: Join the Ediens community

Ediens' presentation at the UMeSCo XXIII congress clearly demonstrated that Ukrainian biotechnological science is at the forefront of world medicine. The company's digital tools, analysis algorithms, and line of highly effective targeted pharmabiotics allow us to treat not the symptoms, but the root causes of the most complex chronic pathologies of humanity.
